VANCOUVER - This time, the Toronto Argonauts did not squander a big lead.Ricky Ray threw for two touchdowns as the Argonauts beat the B.C. Lions 40-23 in CFL action Friday night. Toronto made amends for a loss in Calgary last weekend, when they led by a wide margin early only to suffer a late loss.Last (game) we had a big (29-10) lead going into halftime, and we couldnt come away with the victory, said Ray. And tonight was the same thing. It gives us a lot of confidence especially coming off of last weeks loss.Toronto posted only its third win over B.C. in 14 meetings since 2008.We played a lot better as a team, said Ray. We didnt have a lot of costly mistakes out there as well as turnovers and penalties. The Argos (4-8) gained sole possession of first place in the East Division as they snapped a four-game losing streak. It was a great job of coming back from a difficult loss last week, said Argos coach Scott Milanovich. I thought we played well at times in all three phases and, most importantly, protected the football. The Lions (7-5) suffered their first loss in three outings as their home record dropped to 3-4.Rookie LaVon Brazill, Steve Slaton, Curtis Steele and Chad Owens a€” who returned after missing two games with a leg injury a€” scored Torontos touchdowns as the Argos led from start to finish. Torontos remaining points came via kicker Swayze Waters and a safety conceded by B.C.Waters was successful on three long field-goal attempts. His second, from 53 yards out, was the longest in the CFL this season.I didnt know that. The most important thing is that it went in, said Waters, who also connected from 45 and 50 yards.Ray completed 24 of 33 passes for 284 yards. B.C. quarterback Kevin Glenn had a comparable night as he also threw a pair of touchdowns and racked up 291 passing yards while completing 21 of 36 attempts.Glenns efforts were hampered by an early interception and untimely penalties from the usually disciplined Lions as they committed 13 infractions for 131 yards. We didnt make enough plays a€” no momentum, said Glenn. We got into a groove too late. That pretty much sums up the whole game. The Lions got touchdowns on receptions from Emmanuel Arceneaux and Bryan Burnham, and another score on a one-yard plunge from backup quarterback John Beck. Kicker Paul McCallum accounted for the other B.C. points. The Argos were solid throughout, showing few signs of fatigue after they stayed out west instead of returning home following a tough loss in Calgary last weekend in which they squandered their largest lead in their history. One series after the Lions got on the scoreboard from a McCallum missed field goal attempt, Ray threw a 38-yard touchdown pass to Owens that staked the Argos to an 18-1 lead.Obviously, its nice to have (Owens) back in the lineup, said Ray. He puts so much pressure on the defence.Scoring is great, said Owens, who left the game for a while in the second half. Youre helping your team out. But just being out here, it was exciting. Thanks to Owens touchdown and a late second-quarter Waters field goal, the Argos led 21-9 at half-time. They stretched their lead to 30-9 early in the fourth quarter before the Lions started a rally that was too little, too late.Notes: Former Lions Jamie Taras and Brent Johnson were inducted into the clubs ring of honour and had their jerseys retired. a€| Brazills TD was the first of his CFL career. For Williams, theres no place better to start fresh than in his hometown of Buffalo. "Its like being drafted all over, especially to my hometown, and get to come back and play in front of the people that know me, where I came from," Williams said during a news conference three days after the Bills acquired him in a trade with Tampa Bay. "The people know what type of guy I am." Calling the homecoming "a dream come true," Williams returns to the place he was a high school star. He went on to a successful yet troubled career at Syracuse, where Williams abruptly quit the team in November 2009 during his junior season. This is the second — and potentially final — chance for Williams to put behind off-field distractions, which led to the Buccaneers parting ways with their starter in exchange for a sixth-round draft pick. The deal was made a year after Williams signed a six-year, $40 million contract. The breaking point came two weeks ago, when Williams was allegedly stabbed in the leg by his brother, Eric Baylor, who has since turned himself in to police. Williams passed his physical in Buffalo and said the injury from the stabbing wont prevent him from reporting for voluntary team workouts, which begin April 22. Williams acknowledged making mistakes and vows to do better, saying there are people depending upon him, including his infant son. "When you get a lot of bad attention or bad this, or bad that, its about: Are you going to let the bad attack you? Are you going to fall?" Williams said. "Or are you going to get up and try again? Thats why I think a fresh start is needed." On the field, Williams has displayed the potential as a No. 1 receiver. A fourth-round draft pick iin 2010, Williams led NFL rookies with 65 catches for 964 yards and 11 touchdowns.dddddddddddd Though a hamstring injury limited Williams to just six games last year, he has 215 catches for 2,947 yards and 25 touchdowns in 54 career games. The Bills are in need of an experienced player to complement returning starter Stevie Johnson, who led an otherwise young group of receivers. Its off the field where questions have arisen. The Tampa Bay Times has reported that Williams neighbours in Tampa were unhappy with noise issues and damage to the players rented home. Without providing specifics, Williams said two of the numerous accusations were made up. When pressed on which two, Williams said the Bills requested that he not discuss it. In trading Williams, Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht referred to the deal as something the team "felt was best for both sides." In Buffalo, coach Doug Marrone is willing to provide Williams the benefit of the doubt. Marrone was in his first season at Syracuse when Williams left the team. Marrone signed off on the trade by saying what happened at Syracuse "is in the past for both of us." Marrone went further by picking up Williams at the airport upon the players arrival in Buffalo. Williams said he and Marrone cleared the air by speaking on the phone before the trade was completed. "He made mistakes. I made mistakes," Williams said. "The situation wasnt handled how it was supposed to be handled. But the past is the past. So were kind of looking forward." Williams acknowledged that one of Marrones concerns at Syracuse was the player skipping classes. That wont be an issue now. "He didnt think I went to class. But since its the pros, he knows Im going to go out there and do my job on the field," Williams said. "Youre always going to get the great Mike on the field."
